Bonus Question(s) that Didn't Air on the Live Radio Show
Note that you can also listen to this while you read it.
Matthew Peterson:
So here’s the bonus question. Like in the Imager Portfolio, if you had a power to change something in the world, what would it be and why?
L. E. Modesitt, Jr.:
You know something, I think I’d defer.
Matthew Peterson:
Defer. [laughs]
L. E. Modesitt, Jr.:
The problem with powers is that everything has incredible consequences. And when you impose your will through a power on other people, the unforeseen consequences are going to be disastrous. I wouldn’t even pretend to try to guess what they would be.
Matthew Peterson:
Yeah.
L. E. Modesitt, Jr.:
Consequently, I wouldn’t even try to change the world. I might change a little bit of my life to make things a little happier [laughs] or a little less of a strain upon occasion. But I don’t think I would want to go out there and try and change the world.
Matthew Peterson:
Yeah.
L. E. Modesitt, Jr.:
Most disasters have been caused by people who wanted, with all good intentions, to change the world.
Matthew Peterson:
Well, I like what you said: if we wanted to change the world, we can start out with ourselves. Change ourselves, make ourselves better and better citizens, better people.
